(exechange) — Oakland, California, August 11, 2022 — Jason Gardner, chief executive of Marqeta, leaves his position. As announced by Marqeta Inc. in a regulatory filing published on Thursday, August 11, 2022, Jason Gardner leaves his post as chief executive officer at the fintech payments company, after almost 12 years in the role, effective once the new Chief Executive Officer is appointed.

Marqeta will undertake a search for a successor.

Jason Gardner’s move coincides with a management shake-up also involving the position of Chief Operating Officer.

No reason given

In the announcement, Marqeta did not explicitly explain the reason for the move.

Gardner will remain as Executive Chairman at Marqeta

“Mr. Gardner will assume the role of Executive Chairman once the new Chief Executive Officer is appointed,” Marqeta said.

Marqeta said: “On August 10, 2022, our Chief Executive Officer, Jason Gardner, announced that the Company has initiated a search process to identify the Company’s next Chief Executive Officer.”

Share price decline since August 2021

The announcement follows a decline in Marqeta Inc.’s share price of 59% since August 2021.

In the position of CEO since 2010

Jason Gardner became CEO of the Company in 2010.

Gardner founded Marqeta and has served as the Company’s Chief Executive Officer and as a member of the Company’s board of directors since November 2010.

He also serves as Chairperson of the Company’s board of directors.

Prior to founding Marqeta, Gardner co-founded PropertyBridge, Inc., a rent and lease-related platform that was acquired by MoneyGram International, Inc. in October 2007, and served as its Vice President from August 2008 to December 2009, Vice President of Business Development from October 2007 to July 2008, and President from May 2004 to October 2007.

From June 2002 to May 2004, Gardner was the Director of Sales for The 451 Group, a technology research group.

Gardner also founded Vertical Think, Inc., an IT management company, and served as its Chief Executive Officer from January 1999 to January 2002.

Gardner holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Arizona State University.
