Salka leaves her post as chief executive officer at the provider of healthcare workforce solutions and staffing services to healthcare facilities, after almost 18 years in the role, effective by the end of the year upon the naming of her successor.

AMN Healthcare will undertake a search for a successor.

Long goodbye

It is a long goodbye. The announcement of Susan Salka’s move comes up to 10 months prior to her planned departure from the post of CEO.

In general, a top executive who announces the departure particularly early may be considered a lame duck.

Lengthy lead times give boards extra time to find replacements, and they also create uncertainty. Would-be successors may jockey for attention and workers may wonder who is actually in charge.

Generally speaking, lame-duck leaders can take a forceful role in selecting a successor and are not expected to launch major shifts.

“To pursue my personal passions”

AMN Healthcare did not give an explicit reason for Susan Salka’s departure from the CEO post. Salka said: “During my 32 years with the Company, I have had the privilege to collaborate with incredible people to strengthen America’s health care system. The opportunities to build this amazing organization into the leader we are today have certainly been invigorating and rewarding. Now, I am excited to take that same energy and time to pursue my personal passions.”

Precise information regarding Susan Salka’s future plans was not immediately available.

“Retire”

AMN Healthcare said: “Susan Salka, its President and Chief Executive Officer, intends to retire by the end of the year upon the naming of her successor.”

AMN Healthcare further said: “On March 7, 2022, after a successful 32-year career with AMN Healthcare Services, Inc. (the “Company”), including 17 years as Chief Executive Officer, Susan R. Salka notified the Board of Directors of the Company (the “Board”) of her intention to retire by the end of the year ending December 31, 2022.
