(exechange) — St. Paul, Minnesota, March 12, 2024 — Mike Roman, chief executive of 3M, leaves his position. As announced by 3M Co. in a news release and in a regulatory filing published on Tuesday, March 12, 2024, Michael F. (Mike) Roman leaves his post as chief executive officer at the conglomerate operating in the fields of industry, worker safety, healthcare, and consumer goods, after about six years in the role, effective May 1, 2024.

Generally speaking, it raises questions when a CEO leaves his post at short notice.

Mike Roman’s duties as CEO will be taken over by William M. (Bill) Brown, a former chairman and chief executive officer at L3Harris Technologies.

The fact that Mike Roman’s successor is brought in from outside suggests that the board may seek to stimulate change with fresh ideas and new initiatives.

In general, an outsider does not have the constraints of an insider when it comes to leading painful changes or making unpopular decisions.
