As announced by Agilent Technologies Inc. in a news release and in a regulatory filing published on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, Michael R. (Mike) McMullen leaves his post as chief executive officer at the specialist in analytical and clinical laboratory technologies, after about nine years in the role, effective May 1, 2024.

Mike McMullen’s duties as CEO will be taken over by Padraig McDonnell, most recently president of the CrossLab Group (ACG) at Agilent Technologies Inc.

No reason given

In the announcement, Agilent did not explicitly explain the reason for the move.

Agilent said: “Agilent Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: A) today announced that Padraig McDonnell, president of the Agilent CrossLab Group (ACG) has been named CEO-elect and chief operating officer (COO) of the company, succeeding current President and CEO Mike McMullen who will retire. McDonnell will become Agilent’s president and CEO and join Agilent’s Board of Directors on May 1.”

Agilent further said: “On February 20, 2024, Michael McMullen, President and Chief Executive Officer (“CEO”) of Agilent Technologies, Inc. (the “Company” or “Agilent”), notified the Company that he will retire as President and CEO of the Company and as a member of the Company’s Board of Directors (“Board”) on May 1, 2024.”

Share price increase since February 2019

The announcement follows an increase in Agilent Technologies Inc.’s share price of 76% since February 2019.

In the position of CEO since 2015

Mike McMullen became CEO of the Company in 2015.

After nearly 40 years with Agilent and its predecessor Hewlett-Packard Co., McMullen will continue as CEO and as a member of the Agilent Board of Directors until May 1.

He will then become an adviser to McDonnell and Agilent until his retirement Oct. 31.

McMullen has served as Chief Executive Officer since March 2015 and as President since September 2014.

From September 2014 to March 2015, he also served as Chief Operating Officer.

From September 2009 to September 2014, he served as Senior Vice President, Agilent and President, Chemical Analysis Group.

Prior to that, he served in various capacities for Agilent, including as the Company’s Vice President and General Manager of the Chemical Analysis Solutions Unit of the Life Sciences and Chemical Analysis Group and Country Manager for Agilent’s China, Japan and Korea Life Sciences and Chemical Analysis Group.

Prior to that, McMullen served as Controller for the Hewlett‑Packard company and Yokogawa Electric Joint Venture from July 1996 to March 1999.

McMullen was appointed to the KLA Corporation Board of Directors in July 2023.

He served as a member of the Board of Directors of Coherent, Inc. from September 2018 to July 2022.
