As announced by TrueBlue Inc. in a news release and in a regulatory filing published on Tuesday, August 15, 2023, Steven C. (Steve) Cooper leaves his post as chief executive officer at the staffing, recruiting and workforce management company, effective September 12, 2023.

Generally speaking, it raises questions when a CEO leaves his post at short notice.

Steve Cooper’s duties as CEO will be taken over by Taryn R. Owen, currently President and Chief Operating Officer at TrueBlue Inc.

The management change is explained as follows. TrueBlue stated: “Cooper initially retired as TrueBlue CEO in 2018 and went on to serve as Chairman of the Board.”

TrueBlue said: “President and Chief Operating Officer Taryn Owen has been promoted to President and Chief Executive Officer and a member of the TrueBlue Board of Directors effective September 12, 2023. Owen will succeed Chief Executive Officer Steven C. Cooper, who, at that time, will step down as CEO and board member and serve in an advisory capacity through year end.”

Share price decline since August 2022

The announcement follows a decline in TrueBlue Inc.’s share price of 30% since August 2022.

Steve Cooper became CEO of the Company in 2022.

Steven C. Cooper was reinstated as the Company’s Chief Executive Officer in June 2022 and has served as a Director of the Company since May 2006.

Cooper served as Board Chair from January 2019 until June 2022, as Board Executive Chair from September 2018 to December 2018, and as the Company’s Chief Executive Officer from 2006 to 2018.

He had previously served as President between 2005 and 2015 and as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer between 2001 and 2005.

He currently serves as a Director and member of the audit committee of publicly traded Boise Cascade Company.
