As announced by Tripadvisor Inc. in a news release and in a regulatory filing published on Monday, November 8, 2021, Stephen (Steve) Kaufer leaves his post as chief executive officer at the online travel company, after almost 22 years in the role, effective in 2022.

It is the end of an era.

Tripadvisor will undertake a search for a successor.

“Now is the best time”

Steve Kaufer’s departure from the CEO post is explained as follows. Kaufer said: “Given our strong position, the talented teams driving our plans forward, and after over 20 years at Tripadvisor, I believe now is the best time to announce my plans to step away from the company next year.”

Precise information regarding Steve Kaufer’s future plans was not immediately available.

Tripadvisor said: “[T]he company’s co-founder and long-time CEO, Stephen Kaufer, will step down from his position at Tripadvisor in 2022.”

Tripadvisor further said: “Co-Founder and CEO Stephen Kaufer will step down from his position at Tripadvisor in 2022.”

Share price decline since November 2018

The announcement follows a decline in Tripadvisor Inc.’s share price of 34% since November 2018.

In the position of CEO since 2000

Steve Kaufer became CEO of the Company in 2000.

Kaufer co-founded Tripadvisor in February 2000 and has been the President and Chief Executive Officer of Tripadvisor since that date.

Kaufer has been a director of Tripadvisor since the completion of the spin-off of Tripadvisor from Expedia, Inc. in December 2011.

Kaufer serves on the Board of Directors of CarGurus, Inc., a company traded on The Nasdaq Stock Market, LLC.

Kaufer also serves as President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Tripadvisor Charitable Foundation, a private charitable foundation.

Kaufer also serves on the Board of Directors of the charity Neuroendocrine Tumor Research Foundation (formerly known as Caring for Carcinoid Foundation).

Prior to co-founding Tripadvisor, Kaufer served as President of CDS, Inc., an independent software vendor specializing in programming and testing tools, and co-founded CenterLine Software and served as its Vice President of Engineering.

Kaufer holds an A.B. in Computer Science from Harvard University.
