(exechange) — Palo Alto, California, January 13, 2021 — Pat Gelsinger, chief executive of VMware, leaves. As announced by VMware Inc. in a news release on Wednesday, January 13, 2021, Patrick Peter (Pat) Gelsinger leaves his post as chief executive officer of the provider of cloud computing and virtualization software after around eight years in the role, effective February 12, 2021.

VMware will undertake a search for a successor.

Pat Gelsinger’s duties as CEO will be taken over in the interim by Zane C. Rowe, currently chief financial officer of VMware Inc., as interim chief executive officer.

Gelsinger will be CEO at Intel

“VMware, Inc. (NYSE: VMW), a leading innovator in enterprise software, today announced that its Board of Directors has initiated a search for a new chief executive officer (CEO) following a decision by Pat Gelsinger to step down from the position, effective February 12, 2021, to lead Intel as its new CEO,” VMware said.

Intel is a semiconductor giant.

Share price decline since January 2020

The announcement follows a decline in VMware Inc.’s share price of 8% since January 2020.

Michael Dell serves as VMware Inc.’s Chairman.

Michael Dell has served as a director and Chairman of the Board since September 7, 2016 when Dell Technologies Inc. acquired EMC Corporation, VMware’s parent company.

In the position of CEO since 2012

Pat Gelsinger became CEO of the Company in 2012.

Gelsinger previously spent 30 years at Intel serving in various leadership roles, including chief technology officer.

Gelsinger will continue to serve on the VMware Board of Directors.

Gelsinger has served as CEO and a director of VMware since September 2012.

Prior to joining VMware, he served as President and COO, EMC Information Infrastructure Products at EMC from September 2009 to August 2012.

Gelsinger joined EMC from Intel Corporation, where he was Senior Vice President and Co-General Manager of Intel Corporation’s Digital Enterprise Group from 2005 to September 2009 and served as Intel’s Senior Vice President, Chief Technology Officer from 2002 to 2005.

Prior to this, Gelsinger led Intel’s Desktop Products Group.
