As announced by Ecolab Inc. in a news release on Thursday, October 29, 2020, Douglas M. (Doug) Baker leaves his post as chief executive officer of the maker of water, hygiene and infection prevention products after almost 17 years in the role, effective January 1, 2021.

It is the end of an era.

Doug Baker’s duties as CEO will be taken over by Christophe Beck, currently president and chief operating officer of Ecolab Inc.

“Well-planned and thoughtful succession process”

Doug Baker’s departure from the CEO post is explained as follows. Jeffery Ettinger, lead director of Ecolab’s board, said: “This announcement follows a well-planned and thoughtful succession process.”

Baker will remain as board chairman at Ecolab

“Baker, currently Ecolab’s chairman and chief executive officer, will retire as chief executive officer but continue as board chairman,” Ecolab said.

Ecolab said: “Christophe Beck, currently Ecolab’s president and chief operating officer, will succeed Douglas Baker, Jr. as the company’s chief executive officer effective January 1, 2021, becoming president and chief executive officer. Beck also has been elected to Ecolab’s board of directors.”

Ecolab further said: “Baker, currently Ecolab’s chairman and chief executive officer, will retire as chief executive officer.”

Share price increase since October 2017

The announcement follows an increase in Ecolab Inc.’s share price of 42% since October 2017.

In the position of CEO since 2004

Doug Baker became CEO of the Company in 2004.

Since joining Ecolab in 1989, Baker has held various leadership positions within the Company’s Institutional, Europe and Kay operations.

Baker was named Ecolab’s President and Chief Operating Officer in August 2002, was promoted to President and Chief Executive Officer in July 2004, and added the position of Chairman of the Board in May 2006.

Baker relinquished the office of President in December 2011 upon completion of the Nalco merger.

Prior to joining Ecolab in 1989, Baker was employed by The Procter & Gamble Company in various marketing and management positions.
