As announced by Skanska AB in a news release on Wednesday, September 13, 2017, Johan Karlström leaves the post as Chief Executive Officer at the construction company after ten years on the job, effective April 13, 2018.

It is the end of an era.

Karlström’s move comes 17 months after Hans Biörck took over as chairman of Skanska AB.

Skanska will undertake a search for a successor.

In the announcement, Skanska did not explicitly explain the reason for Karlström’s move, leaving room for speculation.

Precise information about the future plans of Karlström was not immediately available.

Skanska said: “Skanska’s President and CEO Johan Karlström has notified the Skanska AB Board of Directors that he wishes to step down.”

On the job as CEO since 2008

Johan Karlström first joined Skanska in 1983 and has held a wide number of positions in the company: site manager, estimator, project engineer, project manager and regional manager.

He was appointed President and CEO for Skanska in April 2008.

Before that he had been a member of the Senior Executive Team since 2001 with responsibility for the business units in the Nordics and the construction operations in USA.

He will remain President and CEO until Skanska’s Annual General Meeting, April 13 2018, when he will also step down from the Board of Skanska AB.

He will serve as Senior advisor until January 2019.
