The exact date of Ergen’s departure was not given in the announcement. Obviously, it was an abrupt change.

Ergen’s duties will be taken over by W.Erik Carlson, most recently Chief Operating Officer at Dish Network Corp.

Dish has already removed the name of Ergen as Chief Executive Officer from the leadership page and lists Carlson as President and Chief Executive Officer.

Ergen’s move is part of a management shake-up also involving the positions of Group President, Dish TV; Group President, Sling TV; and Chief Human Resources Officer.

The management change is explained as follows. Dish said: “Chairman Charlie Ergen has relinquished his post as Chief Executive Officer to devote more attention to the company’s emerging wireless business.”

Ergen will remain as executive Chairman at Dish

“Charles W. Ergen, who formerly held the position of Chief Executive Officer, will remain as executive Chairman of Dish Network and Chairman of the Board of Directors,” Dish said.
