(exechange) — Bangalore, India, August 18, 2017 — Vishal Sikka, chief executive of Infosys, leaves the position. It is an abrupt change. As announced by Infosys Limited in a news release on Friday, August 18, 2017, Vishal Sikka leaves the post as Chief Executive Officer at the information technology and outsourcing services company in a surprising move after about three years on the job, effective immediately.
Sikka has been appointed Executive Vice Chairman effective today, “and will hold office until the new permanent Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director takes charge, which should be no later than March 31, 2018,” Infosys said.
Sikka will continue to focus on strategic initiatives, key customer relationships and technology development. He will report to the Company’s Board.
Infosys will undertake a search for a successor.
Sikka’s duties are taken over in the interim by Pravin Rao, currently Chief Operating Officer at Infosys Limited.
“Distractions and disruptions”
The sudden management change is explained as follows. Infosys said: “In his notice of resignation to the Board, Dr. Sikka reiterated his belief in the great potential of Infosys, but cited among his reasons for leaving a continuous stream of distractions and disruptions over the recent months and quarters, increasingly personal and negative as of late, as preventing management’s ability to accelerate the Company’s transformation.”
Precise information about the future plans of Sikka was not immediately available.
Infosys said: “At its board meeting held on August 18, 2017, the Board of Directors … of Infosys Limited … accepted the notice of resignation of Dr. Vishal Sikka as the Managing Director and CEO, effective immediately.”

On the job as CEO since 2014
Sikka served as Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Infosys Limited since June 14, 2014.
Prior to joining Infosys, Sikka was a member of the Executive Board of SAP SE, leading all products and technologies, including all of product development, and driving innovation globally.
In his 12 years at SAP, Sikka held several senior leadership roles including becoming SAP’s first-ever CTO in 2007.
As CTO, Sikka was responsible for overall technology architecture and ensuring coherence in SAP’s product strategy.
Sikka received his BS in Computer Science from Syracuse University.
He holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Stanford University.
