(exechange) — Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, March 20, 2017 — Neil Smit, chief executive of Comcast Cable, hands over the reins. It is a change at short notice. As announced by Comcast Corporation in a news release and in a regulatory filing published on Monday, March 20, 2017, Neil Smit leaves the post as Chief Executive Officer at Comcast Cable Communications, the cable television division of Comcast Corporation, in a surprising move after around five years on the job, effective April 01, 2017.
Smit’s duties are taken over by Dave Watson, currently Chief Operating Officer at Comcast Cable Communications.
“Reasons related to the injuries I sustained in my previous career”
The imminent management change is explained as follows. Neil Smit said: “As I approach 60, and for reasons related to the injuries I sustained in my previous career, I am looking forward to spending more time with my family.”
Smit will remain as Vice Chairman at Comcast Corporation
“Neil Smit moves into a new role as a Vice Chairman, Comcast Corporation, effective April 1. For the next few months, Smit will work closely with Watson to ensure a smooth leadership transition. Smit will then work part-time with Comcast leaders to develop future technology-oriented business opportunities,” Comcast Corporation said.
Comcast Corporation said: “On March 17, 2017, Neil Smit, Senior Executive Vice President of Comcast Corporation … and President and Chief Executive Officer of Comcast Cable Communications …, announced his intention to retire as President and CEO of Comcast Cable after seven years of service with Comcast.”

Neil Smit has been the Chief Executive Officer and President of Comcast Cable Communications, LLC since December 2011 and March 2010 respectively.
Neil Smit serves as President and Chief Executive Officer of Comcast Cable and Executive Vice President of Comcast Corporation.
In this role, Smit is responsible for all business aspects of the Company’s cable operations.
Smit joined Comcast in March 2010 from Charter Communications where he served as Chief Executive Officer and Director since 2005.
Prior to joining Charter, Smit was the President of Time Warner’s America Online Access Business, where he oversaw Internet access services, including America Online (AOL), CompuServe and Netscape ISPs.
He also served at AOL as Executive Vice President, Member Services, and Chief Operating Officer of MapQuest.
Smit also was a regional president with Nabisco and served in a number of management positions at Pillsbury.
For five and a half years, Smit served on active duty with the Navy SEAL Teams and retired from the service as a Lieutenant Commander.
Smit serves as Chairman of the Executive Committee and is a member of the Board of Directors of C-SPAN.
Additionally, he is a member of the Executive Committee of The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s Board of Trustees and is a member of the Board of Visitors for Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University.
He has served as the Chairman of CableLabs, the research and development consortium for the cable industry, and as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Cable & Telecommunications Association.
Smit earned a Bachelor of Science from Duke University and a Master’s degree from Tufts University’s Fletcher School.
He resides in Philadelphia with his wife and sons.
