(exechange) — Mission Viejo, California, February 21, 2019 — Christopher Christensen, chief executive of Ensign, leaves the position. As announced by Ensign Group Inc. in a news release and in a regulatory filing published on Thursday, February 21, 2019, Christopher R. Christensen leaves his post as chief executive officer at the nursing care facilities company after about 13 years in the role, effective May 30, 2019.

It is the end of an era.

Among the 3,000 largest publicly held companies incorporated in the U.S. based on market capitalization, the average tenure of the CEOs who departed over the past 12 months was 8.2 years, according to data compiled by exechange. Only 31 percent of the CEOs who departed over the past 12 months left the position after more than 10 years.

Christopher Christensen’s duties will be taken over by Barry R. Port, currently chief operating officer of Ensign Services, Inc.

Christopher Christensen’s move is part of a management shake-up also involving the positions of chief operating officer; and chief investment officer.

In the announcement, Ensign did not explicitly explain the reason for Christopher Christensen’s move, leaving room for speculation.

“Christopher Christensen, president and chief executive officer and member of the Ensign board of directors, has been appointed executive chairman and will continue to work full-time on strategic growth initiatives and new business ventures. Mr. Christopher Christensen will also serve as chairman of the board,” Ensign said.

Share price increase since February 2017

The announcement follows an increase in The Ensign Group, Inc.’s share price of 209 percent since February 2017.

Roy E. Christensen has served as the Company’s Chairman of the Board since 1999 and currently serves on the Board’s quality assurance and compliance committee. He served as the Company’s Chief Executive Officer from 1999 to April 2006.

Roy Christensen, current director and chairman of the board, will continue his service on the board as a director and chairman emeritus.

In the position of CEO since 2006

Christopher Christensen has served as the Company’s President since 1999 and Chief Executive Officer since April 2006.

Christensen has concurrently served as a member of the Company’s Board of Directors since forming the Company in 1999.

Prior to forming Ensign, Christensen served as acting Chief Operating Officer of Covenant Care, Inc., a California-based provider of long-term care.

Christensen has overseen the Company and its growth since the Company’s inception in 1999.

Christensen served on the Board of Directors of CareTrust REIT from June 2014 to April 2015.

Christensen is the son of the Company’s Chairman of the Board, Roy E. Christensen.

In his new role as executive chairman, Christopher Christensen will shift his focus to strategic growth initiatives and new business ventures.
