As announced by HeidelbergCement AG in a news release on Tuesday, February 19, 2019, Bernd Scheifele leaves his post as Chief Executive Officer at the building materials company after 15 years in the role, effective January 31, 2020.
It is the end of an era.
It is a long goodbye. The announcement of Bernd Scheifele’s move comes up to 11 months prior to his planned departure from the post of CEO.
In general, a top executive who announces the departure very early may be considered a lame duck.
Bernd Scheifele’s duties will be taken over by Dominik von Achten, currently Deputy Chairman of the Managing Board of HeidelbergCement AG.
“Long-term succession planning”
Bernd Scheifele’s departure from the CEO post is explained as follows. Fritz-Jürgen Heckmann, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of HeidelbergCement AG, said: “The changes in 2020 are part of long-term succession planning for the Supervisory Board and Managing Board of HeidelbergCement.”
Precise information regarding Bernd Scheifele’s immediate future plans was not immediately available.
The Supervisory Board asked Scheifele to stand as candidate for Chairman of the Supervisory Board after the end of the statutory two-year cooling-off period in 2022. “After careful consideration, Dr. Scheifele has declared that he will comply with this request,” the company said.
HeidelbergCement said: “Upon conclusion of his third term at the end of January 2020, Dr. Bernd Scheifele will give up the chair of the Managing Board of HeidelbergCement AG to the current Deputy Chairman, Dr. Domink [sic!] von Achten. This decision was made by the Supervisory Board at its meeting on 19 February 2019.”
